Re-opening of Sports for the 2020-21 School Year

Hopefully 2020-21 will be a near normal year for sports at St. Vincent’s. The IHSAA has issued guidelines for member schools to follow that will allow schools to safely resume athletic activity. In addition, the diocese, the Fort Wayne CYO and the St. Vincent’s school administration are all planning on how to safely restart this fall. A link to the IHSAA guidelines is available here. You will find athletic related information on pages 18-25. Additionally, Bishop Dwenger and Bishop Luers have issued their protocols for restarting practices. St. Vincent’s will model our protocols after the high schools. You can view Bishop Dwenger’s protocols here. As more information comes out on this issue from the IHSAA, the high schools and the CYO, updates will be posted on our school website.

Here are some dates to keep in mind:

  1. Registration for winter sports will open on the Athletics webpage on or about October 1st and remain open throughout the month of October.
  2. If you have a registration credit from cancelled spring sports please contact the athletic director to register.
  3. Formal practices will begin the first week of November.
  4. Informal, optional conditioning sessions may be held in late October.
  5. Competitions with public schools begins the third week of November.

NOTE: Physicals, Concussion Awareness and CYO Consent forms must be submitted before an athlete can begin practicing.

***IMPORTANT***

Physical Examination Forms for the 2020-21 School Year

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2019-20 school year and the continued stress on the medical community, the Fort Wayne CYO and St. Vincent’s school will accept valid physical examination forms presented on behalf of eligible students during the 2019-20 school year. These forms shall be declared valid during the upcoming 2020-21 school year. Transfer students moving from another school must provide a copy of their valid 2019-20 Physical Examination Form to St. Vincent’s School in order to be eligible for athletics in 2020-21. Incoming fifth grade students with a valid Physical Examination Form completed and signed after April 1, 2019 will also be eligible to compete during the 2020-21 athletic season.

***UPDATE AND RECOMMENDATION***

St. Vincent’s school has recently received this letter from a significant number of Fort Wayne pediatricians and family practitioners disagreeing with the IHSAA on this issue. They recommend and encourage all athletes to have a physical examination before resuming sports this year. After careful consideration, St. Vincent’s school agrees, recommends and encourages each athlete to get a physical this school year.
